A new study published in the New England Journal of Medicine shows that most doctors will face a medical malpractice lawsuit against them at some point in their career.
This may cause doctors to practice defensive medicine as a result. Defensive medicine can be costly because it causes extra tests to be run in order for doctors to double check their diagnosis.
The study looked into data from nearly 41,000 physicians from 1991 to 2005 and estimated that nearly 99 percent of all physicians in “high-risk” fields will have a lawsuit filed against them. When looking into “low-risk” fields, the number is still at 75 percent. In any given year, at least 7.4 percent of all doctors face a medical malpractice claim.
